Plan ahead for Health and Wealth!

We are too occupied with our present lives and fail to plan for our future, 5 years, 10 years, or even more, down the line. The hectic lives that we live make us forget if there is a life ahead that needs attention today. The future from a viewpoint of wealth, relations, health, and happiness.

To live in the present and do something on a daily basis for your future life is an art. Now the point is how do we want our future life to be? And how do we get ourselves ready for our future life? The question to ask first is what type of life do you want in the future?

Do you want a stressful or stress-free life? Do you want to be able to move freely or be ridden with health issues? Do you want to have a stable financial position or do you want to live a life with debt? Of course, no one would want to choose a life that hinders joy in their life. Everyone would want certainty, stability, and freedom to live a happy life. But how can we secure all these goals?

You can secure your future through daily activities in the present. It is by taking care of the priorities that you have set for your future self.

From a financial standpoint what are you doing today that will ensure stability for you 5 years down the line? Have you planned for medical emergency expenses or thought of taking medical insurance? Have you thought of your kids' higher education expenses? Have you saved enough liquidity to pay for 6 months’ expenses if god forbid you lose your job? Have you saved for your retirement? How do you think your retirement would be funded if you do not have a pension? What about your travel plans to dream destinations, owning a dream car, or purchasing products of luxury brands?

Do you have a disposable income that you think will never stop? Probably you have highly paid packages but how is your lifestyle in comparison to what you earn? And if you are earning handsomely and still have nothing to save by the end of the month you are living on the edge. Your expenses will certainly rise as you age to the point where your kids become self-dependent. Then probably they would decrease. And if you are not owning the house that you desired to live then you either messed up your finances or were aiming too high.

These questions are important to assess where you stand today and whether you have given thought to these aspects.

Failing to plan on these aspects is planning to fail in the future.  If you avoid these difficult questions today under the alibi that I will see when the time comes, you would surely be in trouble when the time comes. If you do not save enough today and have no idea of future revenue streams, you will surely have a challenge when a financial earthquake strikes.

If we talk about having a healthy body, the choices you make will determine your future health. A single donut does nothing much to a body, but a habit of eating it every time you get a chance will surely have an impact 5 years down the line. Similarly, a single cigarette does not cause much harm to the body, but a habit to smoke every day for years will surely harm your body.

Now we have people arguing that so and so smoked or drank every day and yet lived 100 years. Such people fail to notice the exceptional odds of the probability. There was even an incident wherein a man survived a fall from the 100th floor of a skyscraper. Surely you would not try to replicate this man.

It is a realization that your capacity to build strength and muscle goes down with age along with the body’s metabolism. So, it becomes even tougher to lose weight at a later stage. Bones and joints get weakened with age. Thus, you may not be able to exert harder than you could at a young age. You could get injured trying to be a 20-year-old fit chap. An injury at a later stage takes longer to heal and can kill your motivation easily.

So, the sooner the realization is, the better.

Index funds: How they can be a better instrument over Mutual Funds

Over the years I have got exposed to the idea of Index Funds through reading some books and following the advice of celebrity investors on social media.  An index fund is a type of mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that aims to replicate the performance of a specific market index, such as the S&P 500 in the U.S., the FTSE 100 in London, or the Sensex 30 or Nifty 50 in India.  Unlike the actively managed funds, which rely on the expertise of fund managers to select individual stocks, index funds passively track the composition and performance of an underlying index. Now the question arises what is an Index? An Index is a benchmark for evaluating the performance of an investment portfolio. In India, we have 2 major Indices- Sensex 30 and Nifty 50. In Sensex 30, we have the top 30 companies by market cap (Share price X No. of shares) listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, and for Nifty 50 it is the top 50 companies by market cap listed on the National Stock Exc...

Speak less than it is necessary!

Often, we are engrossed in a debate where emotions take over the rationality of the usage of words. You forget that silence at times is the best antidote to increased conflict. Today in the office my boss was questioning the drafting skills of a junior who committed an avoidable error on the draft. The English language, apart from Hindi, is the main medium of correspondence in central ministries. You need to be well versed in either of these to be able to conduct the official work. All juniors are supposed to put up drafts in the language of the correspondence. But the junior was adamant in defending himself on why it was not his fault that the mistake happened. Boss further questioned each of his reasoning. He kept on giving witless responses. Finally, he ended up embarrassing himself. What I learned from another story heard from P.B. today was that it is better to own up to your mistake than to defend it. He is true to his word as he practices it in real life too. I have ...

Habits App. Habits Over the last year, I have been able to create some pretty strong Habits including abstinence from erotic indulgences on the Internet. I had gotten down the spiral several times in my life over this bad habit since my school days. But it prevailed throughout my life even in the phase where I was otherwise astute. It affected my behavior and conduct around the opposite sex. It brought anxiety and frustration whenever I relapsed after a concrete resolve. I always had this feeling that one day I would be able to ditch it and lead a life where there was no need to go through it. However, I failed year after year. I had started growing skeptical of my ability to ever be able to work around it. This time, the trick to observe and track my progress played the trick. This particular aspect of the Habits app has changed my life in the last year. It has created a chain reaction where I could stack one good habit over the other, be it abstinence from a bad habit or a positive a...
