Thoughts

As I entered my car after office, the 'Aarti' sung by Satinder Sartaj played on the music system. I had a passing emotion of not staying closer to my roots. When I was young, I had a choice to stay in PCS or join IRS. I chose the latter.

My aspirations transcended the boundaries of my state, religion, and culture. I felt that life had endless possibilities for me. It felt better to go for a job that exposed me to diversity. My service has definitely provided me with a flavor of the country. However, it lacked on many fronts that a state service could fulfill.

At times when I get requests from family and friends to get their work done with the state administration, I feel resourceless at times. My idea while leaving PCS and joining IRS was that I would again clear the exam and get home cadre in either IAS or IPS. I had mistaken my ability to be consistent with the results. I could not further improve my result and ended up serving in my current service.

As a result, I got away from my home state. I lost the chance to wield influence in my state. I could have taken a posting in Punjab in my service as well. But the work profile of my service in Punjab is not extensive as compared to Delhi or Gurgaon. I chose not to go there. I have reserved that phase for a later posting in my career. Now when I look back I sometime feel I could have been in PCS and been more socially active while being resourceful.

Life has different plans. They are for the good or the bad, depending on our interpretations. Life cannot give all. I can have a lot of ‘ifs’ in life. ‘If I was born in an affluent family’, ‘If I was born in the U.S.’, ‘If I had a head full of hair’, ‘If I had enough wealth to not work for money’, ‘If I could join politics’. These Ifs would have existed in the other job too.  They would always exist. You choose happiness. It does not come by chasing jobs and positions. It comes through contentment. It comes through realizing and accepting your limitations.

Went to Fit7. 15 min cardio followed by Rehab and leg exercises. Tried barbell front squat with a total of 40 kg weight.

The squat felt a bit unnatural owing to 3 months gap due to injury and a loss of mobility. The moment was pain-free but the body was not ready to do multiple steps. I am happy that it is not painful after that particular exercise. The last 2 times when I did a single leg squat it pained in the night and felt as if the injury was showing its ugly head again. So, I am working on the mobility issues now. The groin pain that I am having for 4 months seems to be the culprit. There I something seriously wrong with my hip area. The back issue must have the emanation in the trouble in the hip. The pain is just not going away. I tried checking the internet for a prospective injury. Most videos point towards hip impingement. The same can be attested only by a Physiotherapist. Dr. Amit did not point in this direction. I have now moved out of Gurgaon. Hence, I need to find a new sports physio who can tell the root cause of the issue and suggest exercises to correct the pain. I am confident that if the groin pain diminishes I would have the back issues taken care of.  Still, I should carry on the rehab exercises that I am doing and hope for the best.

Leg exercises felt good. I had stopped doing Leg extensions for a long time due to their limited role in functional movements. But now that I have limited options I need to do whatever places the least stress on my back. Calf raise machine is now being used extensively. Indian gyms ignore this important machine for no reason. Hope I do not waste the opportunity to work out on the weekend. I should at least do rehab exercises if I visit my hometown.

Index funds: How they can be a better instrument over Mutual Funds

Over the years I have got exposed to the idea of Index Funds through reading some books and following the advice of celebrity investors on social media.  An index fund is a type of mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that aims to replicate the performance of a specific market index, such as the S&P 500 in the U.S., the FTSE 100 in London, or the Sensex 30 or Nifty 50 in India.  Unlike the actively managed funds, which rely on the expertise of fund managers to select individual stocks, index funds passively track the composition and performance of an underlying index. Now the question arises what is an Index? An Index is a benchmark for evaluating the performance of an investment portfolio. In India, we have 2 major Indices- Sensex 30 and Nifty 50. In Sensex 30, we have the top 30 companies by market cap (Share price X No. of shares) listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, and for Nifty 50 it is the top 50 companies by market cap listed on the National Stock Exc...

Compliance refers to the act of following instructions or conforming to the expectations or demands of others. It is an important concept in psychology and child development as it relates to how individuals, particularly children, respond to authority figures and social norms. Compliance can occur due to various reasons, including a desire to avoid punishment, gain rewards, or seek approval from others. To understand the practical outcomes of compliance tactics, Jonathan Freedman, a social psychologist conducted an experiment involving school boys to assess their compliance to directions to not do a certain activity. The direction in this regard was to not play with a particularly attractive toy and different samples of school boys were given directions in different ways. In the first leg of the experiment, Freedman invited the boys one at a time into the experiment room and presented them with 5 toys to play with. However, he gave a command to the child to not play with an attract...

Think before you say something, it may be hard to retract- the fallacy of Consistency Bias

The Korean War was a conflict that took place on the Korean Peninsula from 1950 to 1953. It began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union and China, invaded South Korea. The war stemmed from the division of Korea after World War II, with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the United States occupying the south. In the conflict, many American soldiers were taken Prisoner of War (POW) in the Chinese camps. The Chinese treated these soldiers differently than their North Korean allies who were brutal in their tactics to solicit compliance from the POWs. The Chinese followed a compliance tactic through commitment garnered from American soldiers by making them write marginally anti-American things about America and marginally good things about Communism. But how did they achieve this? They set on a path of staggered compliance by committing soldiers to their own confessions. What were these confessions about? The Chinese used to force American soldier...
