The human mind by default looks for the path of least resistance. It would avoid difficulty at all costs if there is an easier way. However good things in life are not easy to come. A good life is not easy to attain. What constitutes a good life is subjective, but the objectivity of its state needs effort.
A good life is a combination of well-being on three fronts- physical, emotional, and mental. All three have subsets ranging from social connections, friendships, a well-functioning brain, a healthy body, the ability to move, love, compassion, contentment, etc. However, achieving all these States is next to impossible for a normal person without being conscious of his being.
At a time, if a person assesses his or her life, he is sure to feel depravity in one or multiple subsets. They may have a successful career but their marital life would be in a distress. They may have earned a lot of money but their health does not allow them to enjoy its fruits. Similarly, they may have great health but they may be low on the social ladder creating a sense of resentment and deprivation.
The examples are endless but it boils down to one fact- very few people in this world are content. In this set of people, there are two categories- one type of people who are fully conscious of their being and the other type who have no sense of being or consciousness. We would examine the first type of people in this article.
The consciousness of one's being comes only through hard work. Sure, one would say that it is just a frame of mind and there is no labor involved to choose this state. However, it should be noted that the human mind is not meant to be always at rest. The state of quietness gives a peak at the consciousness and the true nature of being. This quietness and stillness are not easily attainable. This restlessness of the mind makes it hard to become aware of oneself.
The hard work that we talked about earlier is a protocol of habits through which one can improve their state of being and get any closer to attaining that consciousness. These protocols include working on one's mind and doing activities that increase the quotient of well-being. It may include daily practice of meditation, exercising, intellectually stimulating your mind, pursuing one's passion, practicing compassion, and getting in harmony with nature.
One would say that the above-mentioned activities are at best subjective means of attaining well-being. One may choose paths of their convenience such as religion, use of drugs or sensual pleasure to attain this state. However the reality of life is that one does not need outside support to realize the gift of well being. The activities mentioned above are independent or minimally dependent on resources. They are raw in form and available to one and all. It is an individuals choice to follow and use them.
